I realized a few days ago where my astonishment at “stocking up” comes from. I’ve been seeing all the advice to be sure you have enough food and medication for two weeks, and wondering how other people live. I always have at least that much and I realized that this is why: </div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
When my mother was twelve there was a big flood in her hometown that lasted two weeks, much worse than any before, but a creek ran through the middle of town, so lesser floods were not unknown. Usually my mother and her parents and her brother lived in their rather large house alone. My grandfather was a grocer and could bring home anything needed when he came home at the end of the day so they didn’t pay much attention to “stocking up.” When the water began to rise my grandmother sent for her mother and two sisters to come stay with them, because my great-grandmother’s house was in the lower part of town, and she sent her cook home to get her bed-ridden octogenarian mother, because their house, too, was much nearer the creek. My brother’s best friend contrived to get himself stranded on the wrong side of the creek so they could be together. That makes ten. I can’t remember where the other two people came from, but there were a dozen of them. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The waters rose, and my grandparents’ house was above the water, but only just. It came up to the porch steps, but not into the house. Across the street the court house was similarly surrounded by water. My mother could watch men in boats arrive there every day after the first few days, and build a fire under a huge iron kettle, and make soup, which they then rowed or paddled off to deliver to people who had no food, or who had no means of heating it (this was 1929.) My grandmother needed no such assistance. She fed a dozen people for two weeks with what she had in the house. The day before the water went down enough for people to go home they had three meals of ham and biscuits and strawberry preserves. The morning the water went down enough to leave they had biscuits and strawberry preserves, but they could have had that for several more meals if necessary. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I don’t even think about keeping enough food on hand for emergencies. It’s just something I automatically do. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The second week of the flood an airplane (1929, remember--airplanes still rare and exciting) flew over and circled the court house and tried to drop a package on the court house lawn, but missed. The package did not land in the water, fortunately, but on the second floor porch of my grandparents’ house. It was typhoid vaccine.</div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
This flood is the reason that town still has an ordinance that prohibits anyone from operating a motor boat on the city streets. Too many people went too fast and the wake broke a lot of plate glass windows downtown. </div>

DaRon, here's the dam from near the parking lot. The fishing I told you about is on the other side of the dam. Today there was not a single soul trying to fish.<br />

Here's the trailhead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This (these?) trail was built by a Scout as an Eagle project, and then later improved by another Eagle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Most of the length of the trails don't have much distant view, just walking through woods.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4fc8n8XUU4WoB_BD0r87sOo8Qc4e4zpx8-C1eEsoCMncFuqernpvJxW9_DjuWy6jRzHJz76ugxZV_xTrStn_OsvOK5VMWDVJLt9DzImDcQ4pPHOV_ySwS9NDQvuqvb65WC0e5QCrW9uE/s1600/IMG_8274.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4fc8n8XUU4WoB_BD0r87sOo8Qc4e4zpx8-C1eEsoCMncFuqernpvJxW9_DjuWy6jRzHJz76ugxZV_xTrStn_OsvOK5VMWDVJLt9DzImDcQ4pPHOV_ySwS9NDQvuqvb65WC0e5QCrW9uE/s320/IMG_8274.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This picnic spot in the middle of the Ridge Trail is new since I was there. I wouldn't mind a memorial like that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLZaIIRBNto8pN2aOE99Ul0w_29tSFYXabhtocHd_r100Y074DB4s2CwKNnIjCZSM1Vt2WiwZSzb48WjCZYNd3GLixAfAew2iCLdxpFO4EeQhjP7JjRbBa_FLNWspKxVZIabm99aPozH4/s1600/IMG_2017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLZaIIRBNto8pN2aOE99Ul0w_29tSFYXabhtocHd_r100Y074DB4s2CwKNnIjCZSM1Vt2WiwZSzb48WjCZYNd3GLixAfAew2iCLdxpFO4EeQhjP7JjRbBa_FLNWspKxVZIabm99aPozH4/s320/IMG_2017.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In addition to the table, there's a sort of sideboard at the edge of the clearing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdAqsIkPYXHN3ZWhlTyvQ3NNg4cNJ_bvFP5v3GaBTRQqHgoebslV3lX8m-IgnGL5mYZeTQbb5Ha74GRZRRjRKZDwXyGXKp21_PGGPKIZm_RSh57H1FrUAM60VsY2vw7Gyo2_ytz0U8hck/s1600/IMG_9956.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdAqsIkPYXHN3ZWhlTyvQ3NNg4cNJ_bvFP5v3GaBTRQqHgoebslV3lX8m-IgnGL5mYZeTQbb5Ha74GRZRRjRKZDwXyGXKp21_PGGPKIZm_RSh57H1FrUAM60VsY2vw7Gyo2_ytz0U8hck/s320/IMG_9956.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Not too many flowers in the shade of the woods, but there were Black-eyed Susans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlaoKJ4QEK3MRRQa97XTYdwh_BQZsZ6nhdysC5bcbFg0a6Xqf7c-z4AoiJOKVWRKo63zGOqMewZlgWaoRQZpr52j6-fncNbI6UNuP-rmz8LqggUJJIv6r69u88qM3YgVN8R1ZVa3pT80s/s1600/IMG_3032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlaoKJ4QEK3MRRQa97XTYdwh_BQZsZ6nhdysC5bcbFg0a6Xqf7c-z4AoiJOKVWRKo63zGOqMewZlgWaoRQZpr52j6-fncNbI6UNuP-rmz8LqggUJJIv6r69u88qM3YgVN8R1ZVa3pT80s/s320/IMG_3032.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I went down the Lakeside Trail to where I usually turn back, wanting a picture of the lake. I'd forgotten how little you can see when the leaves are on the trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJb1qBtTBq02BPp9xUqO-qFA9m25l8LNFCxQHcry4SHwp9N8NsLeGGXnClOLmsFty1h_EpHPgqvVkhfTHRTEwaU4rOd3uOhw32Rh1kffYaKNk36-1Zl8FQqVf8NVNIrR23D2ztKSG59o8/s1600/IMG_0100.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJb1qBtTBq02BPp9xUqO-qFA9m25l8LNFCxQHcry4SHwp9N8NsLeGGXnClOLmsFty1h_EpHPgqvVkhfTHRTEwaU4rOd3uOhw32Rh1kffYaKNk36-1Zl8FQqVf8NVNIrR23D2ztKSG59o8/s320/IMG_0100.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So I went all the way to the bottom. This was the less steep side of the loop. You can see some water through the trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE9oNfCYBp-jD64kGmbK1t9Aev1lZBjm7UF2nD2_mMz0p2AnOacAM6RQOdzVXeB_ZLl487c1tVoDQ_gw_v0QJ3tdR7_HlzrFe3JplXoM1EBMHeSJIbR1TOWB2aTl09Y4_CcvHNFzPty8I/s1600/IMG_2433.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE9oNfCYBp-jD64kGmbK1t9Aev1lZBjm7UF2nD2_mMz0p2AnOacAM6RQOdzVXeB_ZLl487c1tVoDQ_gw_v0QJ3tdR7_HlzrFe3JplXoM1EBMHeSJIbR1TOWB2aTl09Y4_CcvHNFzPty8I/s320/IMG_2433.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, a more open view.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2OKAv8Adgm73mCqdiDqgH1kYyMlMXa2-SukDccTQdNWFLVZJfLQUftuGaV9MQj5WaG-6_I9a8eq8li1lSY89Hmwg5yBIZpO4lxF_ttvnfUSRlRrs1gJbXuTh_01XMDSgCzn4D8VOTZgs/s1600/IMG_5163.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2OKAv8Adgm73mCqdiDqgH1kYyMlMXa2-SukDccTQdNWFLVZJfLQUftuGaV9MQj5WaG-6_I9a8eq8li1lSY89Hmwg5yBIZpO4lxF_ttvnfUSRlRrs1gJbXuTh_01XMDSgCzn4D8VOTZgs/s320/IMG_5163.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, instead of retracing my steps all the way back, I decided to tackle the steep end of the trail.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdiQQom66hZYkBeWdtETaP4P8J2d2dFD6PSsQM85-9DlUc1tsFWFk9Fn2N8OO-dKO-9yDo6-eAw8j_ZmJ7umQKzL9CkIiWzqBUW0eA9e3j4RtH7-azhyCPU760uRGWtU5WTEOtno7pZ4A/s1600/IMG_4785.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdiQQom66hZYkBeWdtETaP4P8J2d2dFD6PSsQM85-9DlUc1tsFWFk9Fn2N8OO-dKO-9yDo6-eAw8j_ZmJ7umQKzL9CkIiWzqBUW0eA9e3j4RtH7-azhyCPU760uRGWtU5WTEOtno7pZ4A/s320/IMG_4785.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It's steeper than it looks. I had to stop and rest, panting, three times.<br />
This is not trail, but it's looking back down towards the lake.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrmgTaZxZSZjMUu6whzWEXJnnzjHYgZyAEvvnFOF88YFO_sLsBNXnxv_YIsPb7o32tABLbpaJ0mdijYBzJtaq8pCS-iGm2Nwhf_oTFx0Si99wmo9QHWEeaJgONR3U0cMm66kgL1hLB4pg/s1600/IMG_6833.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrmgTaZxZSZjMUu6whzWEXJnnzjHYgZyAEvvnFOF88YFO_sLsBNXnxv_YIsPb7o32tABLbpaJ0mdijYBzJtaq8pCS-iGm2Nwhf_oTFx0Si99wmo9QHWEeaJgONR3U0cMm66kgL1hLB4pg/s320/IMG_6833.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In case the pictures truly fail to do it justice, my phone's exercise application thought I had climbed twelve flights of stairs. <br />
<br />
I have so many favorite places to walk, but this is a <i>favorite</i> favorite.solarityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03606487180967915130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487713068002286095.post-51208442505550129732017-09-15T09:16:00.000-04:002017-09-15T09:16:00.321-04:00avoiding dangerAvoiding danger is not possible. Yesterday at lunch I reached for a banana on my kitchen counter and felt such sharp pain in my shoulder that if I had grasped the banana I would have dropped it. The kind of pain where you can't breathe. Since then I have tried to be very careful what I do with my left--dominant--arm. I have found no way to predict what particular movement will cause pain when.<br />
<br />
If reaching for a banana can cause injury, there is no safety anywhere: something I already knew.solarityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03606487180967915130noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487713068002286095.post-89264727365233825982016-09-01T17:17:00.002-04:002016-09-01T17:17:40.658-04:00End of summer getting closerI walked the so-called Big Beech trail today (I've never seen a beech that's really big there--I'd call it the Many Beeches trail) for the third time since that part of the Louisville Loop opened. My troublesome foot is still content right now. Most of the two and a half miles I walked was soft surface; only about a mile was paved, the part to the trail and back from it. That's the part where all the wildflowers were, though, out in the sun and not in the woods. There was plenty of boneset in the woods, but the buds were barely showing any white.<br />
<br />
I may have seen this one before, but I have no idea what it is.<br />

Most of the goldenrod hadn't opened yet, but this had.<br />

<br />
There was plenty of wild ageratum in patches. No, this isn't sideways. It's all reaching out of the shade.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYHPq6uAYqqqXbSVY-bsIiaxSHsoeeW7D_Lia34dMxldcYdzrrYRzNC10amGDCKMRO8xdRpe1dJopVdaOJk-5E9kkGxgaOmCaTDAL-a8ElmClpeynNqaO4puA21_TK4H_y7LWEWwh1yr4/s1600/IMG_1835.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYHPq6uAYqqqXbSVY-bsIiaxSHsoeeW7D_Lia34dMxldcYdzrrYRzNC10amGDCKMRO8xdRpe1dJopVdaOJk-5E9kkGxgaOmCaTDAL-a8ElmClpeynNqaO4puA21_TK4H_y7LWEWwh1yr4/s320/IMG_1835.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Lots of color. In my yard, the goldenrod, which I should pull up since I'm allergic to it, but don't because it's so pretty and the pollen, unlike some, is heavy and doesn't travel far (such as into the house) is not at all ready to open, and most of the pokeweed berries have been harvested by the birds, so the only patch of color right now is the zinnias by the front steps. I cut some nearly every day.<br />
<br />
This walk was so satisfying. The weather was perfect, sunny but not hot, with a mild breeze. I must make more of an effort to take walks that my foot will be happy with.solarityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03606487180967915130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487713068002286095.post-44891603990168758872015-02-19T17:57:00.000-05:002015-02-19T17:57:06.179-05:00some heatHere's last summer's cayenne peppers, good and dry.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here's the result, which ought to be about a year's supply, since I don't use much when it's homegrown and not aged on some grocery shelf.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0BoecC3MLoC_1ThbYiFiCj1ZC-C7ro0gm78o7xrS470iEoC6BS6biCOUS79ib67NYCRlGWokaAPeU46myvNRaKFKkzra-hEAx4d8KfHeuQ8eGv8UyDrBt5IXYuTlTpjdazOLxD2kPq-c/s1600/IMG_2116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0BoecC3MLoC_1ThbYiFiCj1ZC-C7ro0gm78o7xrS470iEoC6BS6biCOUS79ib67NYCRlGWokaAPeU46myvNRaKFKkzra-hEAx4d8KfHeuQ8eGv8UyDrBt5IXYuTlTpjdazOLxD2kPq-c/s1600/IMG_2116.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And here's the very last pepper, that was green before the first frost when I spotted it and brought it indoors, where it has been very very slowly ripening, until I picked it today and hung it up to dry and await its turn in the coffee grinder.<br />

I found some amazingly cheap ones, fortunately.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsfRhObifoV_kulHwzKBmcJJmhzqJ-4rch_Hq9kM5ItYuDoB3WQosa4fwdYHHxaYwMUrZRkoCKDF8Gl7Lnr126nEq7LFl5Ycfvki4Zuvxney1IjVC_Rrssq4XfQXJo_bcThTkC2IvlDx4/s1600/Image+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsfRhObifoV_kulHwzKBmcJJmhzqJ-4rch_Hq9kM5ItYuDoB3WQosa4fwdYHHxaYwMUrZRkoCKDF8Gl7Lnr126nEq7LFl5Ycfvki4Zuvxney1IjVC_Rrssq4XfQXJo_bcThTkC2IvlDx4/s1600/Image+1.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The stick horse has a button you press to make him whinny. (No, don't ask yourself why I'm absolutely certain this stick horse is a gelding: my underbrain at work.) <span style="font-size: 14px;"> </span>I, of course, made my own horse noises for my stick horse (he was black, with a white star, and some white hair in his black mane, so his invisible feet probably had at least a few white socks) but I realized how few children nowadays have horses over the back fence to imitate. How sad.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I, on the other hand, had no plush dinosaurs at all. Also sad. This one is so very squishy, yet so RAWR! that I'm tempted to keep him. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had a lot of little metal cars, but no tanks. I had a toy tractor, though, and best of all, a fire engine that pumped real water through its hose. I hope that the unknown children who ultimately receive these have as much fun with them as I had with mine. </div>
<div>
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
(which I appreciate more in wet weather.)<br />
<br />
About half a mile of this from the parking lot to the Big Beech trail.<br />
<br />
It was a very sunny day, which meant that when I took pictures with the iPod touch I could see absolutely nothing in the screen except my reflection, which led to lots of pictures like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLMhQp5Nl7SQsl35DFgF-kLx0dva-s7KnZ2kxmO1pmqtUMXoXoZRXwHtYAinZv8WD0JBaFolaPNbeTinguanKBvcs57DOb_Lx3qgSniaCzjC8cxaQdc9LYrlaTLQZO-dFq6G3ptlyCfpQ/s1600/IMG_1106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLMhQp5Nl7SQsl35DFgF-kLx0dva-s7KnZ2kxmO1pmqtUMXoXoZRXwHtYAinZv8WD0JBaFolaPNbeTinguanKBvcs57DOb_Lx3qgSniaCzjC8cxaQdc9LYrlaTLQZO-dFq6G3ptlyCfpQ/s1600/IMG_1106.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a really pretty bridge, and I took lots of pictures of it, most of them with even better views of my fingers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8uY1EDr33AEv-T4Hr68mH-jgL1CyFu6At01urQrz8eLnJWi4XIKe8PgVNTbdby-q0n71EEcKLuPaQSrTuYtQkWK83EZgra96E8hMJ-RW_U-1EGq8_g1Xp3hNl0fDnK7Nv20iVbqZ4zk4/s1600/IMG_1109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8uY1EDr33AEv-T4Hr68mH-jgL1CyFu6At01urQrz8eLnJWi4XIKe8PgVNTbdby-q0n71EEcKLuPaQSrTuYtQkWK83EZgra96E8hMJ-RW_U-1EGq8_g1Xp3hNl0fDnK7Nv20iVbqZ4zk4/s1600/IMG_1109.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
On the other side of the bridge, this structure stands. Is it a bike rack or an exercise device? Or both?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik_sENbb1rHEpyCx2C2G0fJvvmoiyutzOTupxWwiRCCUslMWa-SFpUnoz74Ig7OijIWTVDg88m4E0RgAryjHqNg_RlKtSzwc665Qp84qpPYSeItj_bpPbkGhxJc2boPDPfwi6J0q3u5uU/s1600/IMG_1113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik_sENbb1rHEpyCx2C2G0fJvvmoiyutzOTupxWwiRCCUslMWa-SFpUnoz74Ig7OijIWTVDg88m4E0RgAryjHqNg_RlKtSzwc665Qp84qpPYSeItj_bpPbkGhxJc2boPDPfwi6J0q3u5uU/s1600/IMG_1113.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here I'm looking back at the pavement after turning onto the trail I planned to take.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIfzRu3zZRTxxbJS32SJPB52srNqLmgmF66lleYGhK-5KRN1GetbAkrHsM2FiXm6GmilG86LbitvIF8XjiSp2KnsHWJuUrbilYn7rIDjWfAUNRp1T-x5-YqnATSGb759mLefQz5sD1RuI/s1600/IMG_1114.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIfzRu3zZRTxxbJS32SJPB52srNqLmgmF66lleYGhK-5KRN1GetbAkrHsM2FiXm6GmilG86LbitvIF8XjiSp2KnsHWJuUrbilYn7rIDjWfAUNRp1T-x5-YqnATSGb759mLefQz5sD1RuI/s1600/IMG_1114.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And forward into the woods.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfgODyIUsEq8qE-fRl_jLtjgcFZRMYITHioal8Ne2mi1ZuCDwzFXdA9_d0DrrUdQsCgGJXffESN_jLCXvHpEMh-8HqzrLbgwSQZo2hqIvyb53ToGezDau2eGcCuHzgyqvqgSZoKbFBiUQ/s1600/IMG_1115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfgODyIUsEq8qE-fRl_jLtjgcFZRMYITHioal8Ne2mi1ZuCDwzFXdA9_d0DrrUdQsCgGJXffESN_jLCXvHpEMh-8HqzrLbgwSQZo2hqIvyb53ToGezDau2eGcCuHzgyqvqgSZoKbFBiUQ/s1600/IMG_1115.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've always loved tree roots.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJEmu7M7AAY8FzWF_lO26D10LkkIydaClYOdn3hxeFiq0JsBhJPVem4ELk5kikUC4Po5S6zZwYO9OgXFytTmX2sNgkTKr0hRIjKB6txZ3KnKaB6TZ0bxtekTRG5TRJ-7c8DdAXoENaVcI/s1600/IMG_1116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJEmu7M7AAY8FzWF_lO26D10LkkIydaClYOdn3hxeFiq0JsBhJPVem4ELk5kikUC4Po5S6zZwYO9OgXFytTmX2sNgkTKr0hRIjKB6txZ3KnKaB6TZ0bxtekTRG5TRJ-7c8DdAXoENaVcI/s1600/IMG_1116.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The trail went uphill quite quickly, but without being too challenging. That's the same creek the bridge crossed.<br />

Here I spent several frustrating minutes trying to get a picture of some wrens. I heard them, and I was so pleased when I actually spotted them. But the camera refused to see them. Somewhere on that downed tree is a wren, but in all five shots I can't find one, and there were actually two of them.<br />

<br />
Yes, it's fall all right. The Osage oranges are on the ground.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx1NpyPY3wD_hkMAU-EkAworvYppOA9LHPEFtr2FBsiShCxl20QErbjpa8MuxlFzZ01tUC0oe823XLGHkjqhU2P-KG6-bBmR8F4dTtiSJgMmA2WJBrKu4Fh8hYp57JCnEQ4T2nNf4x368/s1600/IMG_1079.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx1NpyPY3wD_hkMAU-EkAworvYppOA9LHPEFtr2FBsiShCxl20QErbjpa8MuxlFzZ01tUC0oe823XLGHkjqhU2P-KG6-bBmR8F4dTtiSJgMmA2WJBrKu4Fh8hYp57JCnEQ4T2nNf4x368/s1600/IMG_1079.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This shows that these woods were pasture once. Early in Kentucky settlement Osage orange was favored as a hedge material; it's got thorns and the wood is very tough. It makes excellent fence posts because it's very slow to rot. It also burns very hot and long-lasting, but if you don't cut and split it while green, you'll blunt a chainsaw on it to no effect. (Good fence post material!)<br />
<br />
And the fruit (loved by squirrels) is about the same size as an orange.<br />

<br />
Buck bushes are called that because deer love the berries. So do birds, and everything else that lives in the woods. By January they'll all be gone.<br />
<br />
See that patch of white that looks like mist in the center of the picture? That's actually the lake, and it looked blue to the eye.<br />

Rock fences last longer than you'd think, what with frost heave. I doubt this has been repaired since the Corps of Engineers bought this land in the 1970s.<br />
<br />
This is the trail, which is about sixteen inches wide between trees at this point. In wet weather you have to step wide across a little rill making a tiny waterfall here. Hence the moss.<br />

I went a little way down the so-called "lake view" trail which is impassable when the lake is high because it's really partly a "lakeside" trail. I didn't go all the way around the loop, because it's extremely steep. This part is steeper than it looks in the picture, but it's not the steep part.<br />

I heard lots of deer galloping off when I disturbed them. The area is a no hunting zone and they're well aware of that. Later in the season they won't bother to move far, but all I saw of them on this walk was white tails in the distance. I was there by myself--only car in the parking lot--so I was the only thing disturbing them.<br />
<br />
And here's the dam that makes the lake:<br />

I'll make another batch before Christmas, and maybe still another, since I like to have fruitcake for my birthday in January.<br />
<br />
The bowls of floured fruit ready to add to the batter, alternately with the cider that I'm substituting for the orange juice my great-aunt's version calls for.<br />

The marigolds are having their last flourish before frost, and the pansies I just bought will keep going long after frost. This section of the Louisville Loop (<a href="http://www.louisvilleloop.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.louisvilleloop.org</a>) opened not long ago, and I walked about a mile and a half and back. Then I drove home over roads that I used to drive to work every day (until I moved to the city) and went from my starting point to my turning around point in about five minutes instead of an hour.<br />
<br />
Just a little distance from the parking space the trail goes under the road alongside Pope Lick creek. If you kept going upstream and follow the right branch (er, the correct branch) you would come to the place where I lived until I was seven.<br />

Even here, where it's about to empty into Floyd's Fork, the creek is shallow most of the time. My father and I used to wade upstream from our place until we got to a place where it was too deep for my three or four year old sized boots. </div>

I went on up through the woods to the top of the hill, which was very much like pastures I used to walk in not so very far from there.<br />

Clearly former pasture, though without any fencing I don't know what they'll do with it now. .<br />

This is the top of the hill, and I went down to the next road crossing, intending to go farther, but the lack of any restrooms anywhere near where I had parked decided me to turn back. Much of this trail is built on a right-of-way through private property, so if you step off the trail behind a handy tree you're trespassing.<br />
And there are lots of tempting trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
On my way back I encountered these two half-grown fawns. Spots barely visible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYbBfsejs2T4w3Lf-CTxzdN8N1jxylzjExkAGgkpmDdbYfhsmpPbAI1HHTpgmVgshpbaIWGlwB4MhalC-RfGOVoZjsdVo58ai6pyZIl1P-g4twfW0T82sMXru0Dqta66XXqNPSkqMUMtc/s1600/IMG_1003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYbBfsejs2T4w3Lf-CTxzdN8N1jxylzjExkAGgkpmDdbYfhsmpPbAI1HHTpgmVgshpbaIWGlwB4MhalC-RfGOVoZjsdVo58ai6pyZIl1P-g4twfW0T82sMXru0Dqta66XXqNPSkqMUMtc/s1600/IMG_1003.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was standing on the trail less than fifteen feet from them, and they were curious but completely unalarmed. They continued browsing as I took many more pictures, expecting them to take off any moment, and wanting to get them in flight.<br />

In fact, I left before they did. See the pricked ears?<br />
<br />

<br />
That was caused by the man on a reclining tricycle, who had a radio (why??? in the woods???) on his bike. Because it was a tricycle, when he saw them he was able to come to a halt without standing up, which might have spooked them, and when I gave up and walked off he was still there watching them.<br />
<br />
I went back towards where I started, seeing a lot more this blue flower, which I don't recognize, and could swear I've never seen before, but I didn't take any more pictures of it, which is a pity as coming from the other direction I might have gotten a clearer one.<br />
<br />

I intend to walk more of this trail, and to make it a regular part of my walking, especially in wet weather. I'm inclined (as a walker, not biker) to sneer at such smooth pavement, but I truly hate wet feet.solarityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03606487180967915130noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487713068002286095.post-90296339334348339882014-10-03T08:06:00.000-04:002014-10-03T08:06:00.134-04:00fall flowers<br />
I ought to cut these down, since I'm allergic to goldenrod, but they're just too pretty to kill.<br />

Since goldenrod pollen (unlike ragweed) is very heavy, it doesn't really bother me out in the yard; the problem is when I drive with my windows open along roads where it's blooming all over the ditches. I should drive with my windows closed and use the air conditioner, and avoid itching eyes and stuffy nose for a day after, but somehow I don't.</div>

The violets and the crabgrass are also pretty happy in that crack, which collects pine needles all winter. </div>

There are six drying up there, although they don't show up well enough to count. Since I seldom use it for anything but quiche (which I make about once a week) that should last me more than a year, once it has dried and I've ground it in the coffee grinder.<br />

My grandmother strongly favored Buff Orpingtons: "good layers and good meat birds both" she said. My aunt would snort and say "White Leghorns! Nothing lays better! And they produce plenty of meat, too!" When I was old enough to read up on chickens, I agreed with my grandmother, but I didn't say so when they got to arguing, because after all, I'd never kept chickens, and they had, although not for many, many years.<br />
<br />
Then, after my father moved in with me, I was going through papers from his basement, (there are still tons to go) and found a letter to my grandmother from her mother. This printed return address on the envelope looks as though she herself sold <i>Brown</i> Leghorns. I distinctly remember that Sis didn't say just "Leghorns," she'd say "White Leghorns," so neither sister followed in her mother's footsteps completely.<br />

In recent years, I have thought I ought to try bantams, since as a single person I don't get through a whole lot of eggs, even though I do bake a lot, but by the time I actually get around to trying this I don't know if the breeds will still exist.solarityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03606487180967915130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487713068002286095.post-53964246486790254692014-07-11T08:26:00.000-04:002014-07-11T08:26:01.548-04:00volunteersHere are some of what's come up in my yard while I haven't had time to weed. Lucky me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I've always loved cornflowers, but I've never had them growing anywhere but the roadside--when I had a roadside. These are in the middle of my peonies somehow. The blue is much more intense than it looks here, but not really darker.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I love Queen Anne's lace even more. This is growing in the cracks in the pavement, so when it dies back this fall I'll need to remove it, but I plan to enjoy it now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I can't see them from the house, or even the deck, so they're mostly going to be enjoyed as cut flowers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here is something I don't recognize. It came up between the cobblestones of my patio, among a lot of other woody plants that don't flower, and that I haven't had time to pull when young, and that now I'll have to dig painfully out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnx0MAJq5blUSdKiFMfihtaW6iGsH3IyVdTJ7UyJxl4O65fftHf35TwAir6udb9EChWHkr27kUAYoE60Q7OB9ENBgGx4mMRRGvPGF5MrTuwOOlp48moVL1HbJR-S5s_DWDSrXhXdMXihk/s1600/IMG_2069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnx0MAJq5blUSdKiFMfihtaW6iGsH3IyVdTJ7UyJxl4O65fftHf35TwAir6udb9EChWHkr27kUAYoE60Q7OB9ENBgGx4mMRRGvPGF5MrTuwOOlp48moVL1HbJR-S5s_DWDSrXhXdMXihk/s1600/IMG_2069.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Unlike the cornflowers, the camera gets the accurate color here.<br />
<br />

<br />
I seem to have dug up more white iris at the old house than I realized I had. I've brought one indoors, but it's in the process of fading, so I photographed the ones outside. (In better light, too.)<br />

Then there's this purplish color. I have some different purple ones with only one blossom open that was damaged by the rain and wind.<br />
<br />

The yellow ones waited so long to show any color that I thought I had failed to dig any up and move them, since nothing was in bloom when I did the digging, but at last, they showed up.<br />

<br />
My narcissus should have bloomed by now, but not so far. The leaves are up, and I certainly gave them enough wood ash over the winter to encourage flower formation, but I'm pleased with how well everything has done the year after getting moved. Moving is stressful for plants as well as people.<br />

The day before this picture there was only one peony bud, so I am hoping for more.<br />

This one's at work. I have nothing that needs watering with more than a watering can, and this lovely thing spreads water much too far for what I have, but since I took this video with my iPod I keep watching it over and over.<br />

Here's the first and second daffodils that bloomed. I was relieved when my <i>Thalia</i> daffodils bloomed today, but I forgot to take any pictures. I'm a little worried that none of the solid yellows are showing yet. I dug things up in a great hurry, and the tenants had moved things around (mainly dividing iris I should have divided when I first moved in) but I'm sure I got some plain yellow ones. We'll see.<br />
