first frost

Last night was the first frost of the season. The night before was the first time the heat came on. Last night I also was given the first deer liver of the season. Two and a quarter pounds. (Supper tonight: broiled liver and sweet potato.) This morning I started the first fire of the season. Fall's here, in spite of all the green leaves still around.

  1. Deer liver! That will be fun to cook with.

It's frosty around here, too. Time to bundle up.

  2. I love liver, but I stopped eating beef liver almost thirty-five years ago because it started to have a bitter aftertaste. Then as my mother's allergies got more severe, someone gave her some deer liver and she shared it with me (True Mother Love!) and it tasted the way liver used to taste. I figured out that deer don't eat food that's been grown with increasing amounts of pesticide. I have not been able to get hold of any organic beef liver to test this, though.

  3. I am not a liver fan. Wish I could figure out how to send you some of the liver from the next time we slaughter. It would be reasonably organic, except for whatever is present in the atmosphere - we don't use chemicals of any kind on our land - which is why my garden is so full of weeds!! I refuse to use weed-killer.

  4. I'll just have to come up there and get me some. (And bring my Australian Cattle Dog to give your cows some exercise.)

My mother's allergies led my parents to stop using anything artificial, even dormant oil on the fruit trees. If you're not trying for fruit that looks commercially acceptable, it doesn't make a bit of difference. Now if only someone would invent a bird net that's self-installing!

  5. Hi --- I saw you started your blog to be able to comment. Great to see you up and running (or blogging).

  6. I am amazed I haven't run down yet. As long as it's effortless I'll keep doing it. 8)

  7. Mary Anne - the gate is always open!! And maybe your dog could teach my dog that she is actually doing it wrong. The DOG is supposed to chase the cows, not the other way around! :)
(The Princess loves to play with the calves and get them to chase her!)
