wild grapes in the city

I finally got around to mowing the back third of the lot for the first time since May (I drive on it to turn around and face the cars out the driveway so it doesn't grow very fast) and on the tree in the corner I found grapes.

It will be interesting to find out if there are any left by the time they're ripe or whether the wildlife eats them green and I don't get any.

Did you notice the spots of red to the left? When I first saw them, I thought it was spicebush, but they're growing on a vine.

I don't think I've ever seen such berries before, and I'm wondering if it was planted there by past humans or by the birds.

  1. It looks like the berries might be from the nightshade plant.. the purple flowers at the bottom left of the last image seems to go along with the berries. They're a wildflower.

  2. I thought the same thing as Hilary. It's been a while since I've seen a nightshade plant (we had them at home; I haven't seen any around here), but that was the first thing that popped into my head.

  3. If you both think so, I should look it up and see what I think. But the purple flowers aren't on the vine, they're growing on their own stem. (I don't have a name for them, but they're a common weed.)

  4. Yes, you should look them up! They do look like nightshade berries (Google is your friend), but my eyesight isn't what it used to be, and we don't have them here. (And if they are growing on a nightshade plant, isn't that poisonous?)
