Here's last summer's cayenne peppers, good and dry.
Here's my coffee grinder, nice and clean.
Here's the result, which ought to be about a year's supply, since I don't use much when it's homegrown and not aged on some grocery shelf.
And here's the very last pepper, that was green before the first frost when I spotted it and brought it indoors, where it has been very very slowly ripening, until I picked it today and hung it up to dry and await its turn in the coffee grinder.

Oh fun to see the process... so to speak. How long does it take to dry?
ReplyDeleteI picked and strung those in October. They've been dry enough that I could have done the grinding since late December. I use so much less than with store bought.
DeleteBonus: you'll have spicy mexican-style coffee if you're as half-assed about grinder cleaning as I am
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't try to clean it out too much. The first few pots are pleasantly flavorful.
DeleteNow I know what to do with all those peppers I don't get into my food. I even have a spice mill.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your POTW. Enjoyed the visit.
We had a pepper tree this year as well (until the cats loved it to death. Apparently pepper tree leaves are very tasty...). I love having my own peppers to cook wiht and to fry up to use all year around :)
ReplyDeleteMine were outside on the porch steps (NOT where the dog goes out to potty!) until frost, and the one I brought in was well above dog reach.
DeleteYou're braver than I am. Once while cutting on of these a seed popped into my eye!!! The pain was unbelievable. I had to tough it out as who could drive to an ER, lol Eventually the pain subsided and I joked that I had a free Lasik treatment as the capsacin does not cause any physical damage.
ReplyDeleteI wear glasses all the time--especially when wielding knives--and have never had anything get in my eye. (This is even helpful when peeling onions.) Glad you warned me, though. The surprise would be awful!
DeleteKudos to you! The hubby loves spicey stuff and would love to do this.
